One of the best places to shop, Diagon Alley has it all. It's located smack in the middle of London through the back door of the Leaky Cauldron; the muggles passing by it unaware of what the location conceals.
Travel to the center of Diagon Alley and you'll see a small street leading through a dimly lit tunnel. It is here that Knockturn Alley is located, providing a more reclusive location for shops that are less....desirable.
Once your shopping is complete and all your preparations are done, your next stop will be at Kings Cross Station where you will go through the barrier to Platform 9 3/4 to catch the Hogwarts Express. Find yourself a compartment and make some friends as you enjoy the ride into Hogsmeade Station, where First Years will load into the boats and cross the Black Lake, and all other students and staff take the carriages to the castle.
Deep within the walls of Hogwarts, the Dungeons sit. They may sound ominous to some, but they really aren't your traditional Dungeons. Classrooms are down here, along with the Slytherin House Common Room and Dorms, and the Detention Hall for the rule breakers.
When you arrive at Hogwarts, you are ushered toward a pair of large, wooden doors at the center of a widespread courtyard. Come through and see what the castle has to offer.
After you climb one flight of stairs, you can exit the Grand Staircase for the rooms off of the First Floor. History of Magic is taught on this level, along with Muggle Studies. There is a large Study Hall here that can be used as an alternative to the Library.
The Second Floor leads the way to the Headmaster's Office, a large room with an ornate walnut desk at the center. Up one small staircase is the Headmaster's living quarters. Ancient Runes is taught on this level, and the student bathrooms are at the end of the long corridor.
Up on the third floor, there are plenty of things to see. The Trophy Room is one of the first rooms you come to, with the Armor Gallery adjacent to it. Down one corridor, you come to the Charms classroom, and the opposite corridor is known as the "forbidden corridor" since it is usually off limits to all students.
The fourth floor of Hogwarts is where the Library is located, a large space taking up a great deal of the level. There are study areas open for use at all hours, and a Restricted Area that requires permission from a staff member to visit. Defense Against the Dark Arts is held on this floor, along with an empty classroom used for spellcasting practice by many students.
As you climb higher up the staircase, trying not to get lost as the stairs change abruptly, you reach the fifth floor. The Prefect's Bathroom is here, a large and lavishly furnished room with many tubs, a steam room, showers, and a lounge used by Prefects, Head Boys, and Head Girls. Transfiguration is taught on this floor in a large, rectangular classroom at the end of the corridor.
The highest floor of the castle, the seventh floor, contains the Gryffindor Common Room and Dormitories, along with the famous Room of Requirement. There is also an empty classroom used for O.W.L. testing and other formal exams.
At each end of the castle, there are towers housing many important areas. The Astronomy classroom is located at the top of the tallest tower, a large balcony extending out from it to the roof where several viewing stations are located. The northern tower is where Divination is taught, in a round, stuffy classroom that you must climb a ladder to get into. The Owlery is in the western tower, set off from any classrooms due to the noise and messes the owls tend to produce.
To the east of Hogwarts castle is a large, dark forest. This forest is strictly off limits to Hogwarts students, except in the course of occasional Care of Magical Creatures lessons or detentions. The forest is thick with trees -- beech, oak, pine, sycamore, and yew, as well as undergrowth such as knotgrass and thorns. There are paths, brooks, and some clearings within the forest. Off the path, the way is almost impassable, although people have moved through it and creatures as large as Acromantulas have managed to get around. The forbidden forest is home to a wide and strange assortment of creatures. Anything wild and dangerous that needs a place to live is put there. Any person who has entered it after dark has emerged hoping never to enter it again.
Here in the Quidditch Stadium, you can come watch a match between the house teams, attend practice if you're a team member, or join in a Flying Lesson with one of the instructors.
Expanding across a great deal of Hogwarts grounds, the Black Lake sits, glittering and calm. The giant squid can often be seen extending a tentacle from the glassy surface, and if you dive deep enough, you might get lucky enough to see a mermaid or two. Near the water's edge, there is a shoreline of sand, and farther out, a large expanse of grass, mostly flat with a few sloping ridges. The grass is scattered with large trees here and there, providing sparse patches of shade on particularly sunny days.
The Whomping Willow is a very valuable, very violent tree planted alone in the middle of the school grounds. It was planted in 1971 to disguise the opening to a secret passage from Hogwarts to the Shrieking Shack. The Willow was so dangerous that it kept other people from entering the passage, therefore kept students from sneaking off to Hogsmeade when they should be in lessons. No one was ever told what the Willow was really for. What people did know was that it would attack anyone who came within reach of its branches. The only thing that every student learns about the willow remains "Approach With Caution".
At the end of the grounds resting against the side of the castle, a large stone wall seperates the Herbology Greenhouses. There are three currently in use, each serving a different purpose. Greenhouse I is for lessons, serving all ages. Greenhouse II is where all medicinal herbs and potion ingredients are grown for the Hospital Wing Healers and Potions class. Greenhouse III is off limits, housing dangerous carnivorous and poisonous plants. This greenhouse is cleared out yearly for the Herbology Exams at the end of Term.
Hogsmeade is the only entirely wizarding village in Britain. It was founded over a thousand years ago, around the same time as Hogwarts, by Hengist of Woodcroft as he was fleeing persecution by Muggles. It's a picturesque little village of thatched cottages and shops, with enchanted candles hanging in the trees during the holidays.
Since not everyone lives in Diagon Alley, Knockturn Alley, Hogsmeade Village, or Hogwarts, we have London. Some families live in other countries, but this is where a majority of the action is. The hub of activity for wizards and witches, if you will.
If you're looking for a way to pass the time while waiting for replies on your threads, then the Chamber of Challenges is for you. Games of all sorts are played here, along with a great array of contests.
If you aren't interested in games or contests, but you looking for quick time-wasters (for example, when your muse is low), this would be the place to go. This is the area for members to discuss...well, anything!
This is the place where all threads that have been thoroughly exhausted or closed will be moved to for reference. Also, any games that are finished, along with contests, will be added here.
FEBRUARY 2, 2010
Lots of things are in the works for Hogwarts Realm. The first and most anticipated is the opening of the castle and grounds. I will begin adding things in this week and getting ready so we can start term officially on next Monday, February 8th. Get those characters finished up and get your shopping, because school is soon to be in session!
Another little tidbit.
I am starting the process of making what I'm calling "Hogwarts Swag". Swag is a term used for "swap and give" and usually consists of small trinkets that people can exchange/collect/etc/.
I'm having some custom stickers printed up for Hogwarts Realm, making iron-on logos for t-shits, and looking into things like key chains and other small things.
These will be awarded for participation and once I have them in my possession, I will write out the requirements for gaining these fun things!
